Gummy smile: individual assessment

A gummy smile describes visible gum when smiling. A consultation considers the smile as a whole and whether cosmetic, dental or another assessment is the appropriate next step.

A gummy smile is a cosmetic description for a smile that shows more upper gum. Smiles and the amount of visible gum vary naturally. The description is not a diagnosis and a photograph cannot establish why an individual smile looks a particular way.

If the appearance concerns you, a consultation can explore what you have noticed, your preferences and whether any cosmetic option within Dr Sknn’s scope is appropriate. The clinician can review the smile at rest and in movement, relevant history and any previous cosmetic procedures. You do not have to choose a treatment first.

The right decision is individual and may be to have no cosmetic procedure. If an option is suitable and available for the exact clinic and eligible practitioner, the clinician explains material risks, expected limits, recovery, aftercare and alternatives before consent. No particular smile appearance or degree of change can be guaranteed.

Dr Sknn’s consultation addresses the cosmetic concern; it is not a dental assessment. Concerns about teeth or gum health belong with a dental professional.

A doctor consultation may recommend another assessment, an alternative approach or no treatment.
What to expect

From your concern to an informed decision

Treatment is subject to consultation and an individual plan.

01 · Choose an area Tell us what you want to discuss

Choose the concern or area, review the factual price information and book a doctor consultation. Selecting an area does not confirm a procedure.

02 · Consultation Assess suitability and alternatives

The doctor reviews your history, the relevant anatomy and your goals. Discuss risks, expected limits, alternatives and total cost before deciding.

03 · Agreed plan Know the preparation and aftercare

If treatment is appropriate, you receive information for the specific procedure and review arrangements. Another approach or no treatment may be recommended.

Patient information

The details behind your treatment choice

Explore the concern, the assessment and the questions to discuss before deciding.

What is a gummy smile?

The term describes the amount of gum visible during a smile. How much gum is visible and what a person wants to discuss vary. Its appearance alone does not establish that treatment is needed.

Why examine the whole smile?

The clinician examines the area at rest and during a natural smile, alongside baseline asymmetry, surrounding anatomy and previous procedures. The consultation should distinguish a cosmetic appearance request from a dental or functional concern.

Could I need a dental assessment?

Not every concern about visible gum is appropriately managed by a cosmetic procedure. Your clinician may recommend dental or another assessment before discussing treatment. A website cannot determine which route fits your own anatomy.

What if a prescription option is discussed?

It requires an individual prescribing assessment, a discussion of the intended use and any use outside the licensed indication. Ask about possible effects on nearby movement, symmetry, expected limits and alternatives.

What information should I have before deciding?

Understand the proposed option, material risks, recovery, aftercare, review arrangements and total cost. Choosing no procedure is a valid outcome of the consultation.

Area selection, prices and your next step

Use the areas and prices panel to find the concern you want assessed. Prices are subject to consultation, and the selected area is carried into a doctor consultation request.

The final treatment plan, risks and total charge are discussed before treatment. A £50 doctor consultation reservation fee applies; current terms are shown before booking.

Questions before booking

Frequently asked questions.

Practical answers before choosing a consultation.

What does gummy smile mean?
It is a cosmetic description for showing more upper gum when smiling. The amount varies naturally. It does not by itself identify a health problem or show whether a cosmetic procedure is appropriate.
What happens at a consultation?
You can describe what you notice and what, if anything, you would like to change. A clinician reviews the smile at rest and in movement, relevant history, previous procedures and your preferences before discussing suitable options and their limits.
Do I need to choose a treatment first?
No. A consultation can conclude that no cosmetic procedure is appropriate. If an option is suitable and genuinely available, the clinician explains its material risks, recovery, aftercare, alternatives and expected limits before you decide.
Can Dr Sknn assess teeth or gum health?
This is a private cosmetic consultation, not a dental assessment. If your concern is about teeth or gum health, speak to a dental professional.
Which clinic and practitioner can I book?
Wilmslow is our primary clinic and Didsbury is active; Leigh is closed. The booking app shows the exact consultation, clinic, eligible practitioner and current availability. A concern discussed here does not mean every service is offered at both clinics.
What does the consultation cost?
Doctor, Nurse and Qualified Practitioner consultations are free. A separate £50 reservation fee applies to Doctor bookings. The app shows payment, cancellation and rescheduling terms before you confirm.
What is the doctor consultation reservation fee?
A £50 reservation fee applies to the doctor consultation. Current payment, cancellation and rescheduling terms are shown in the booking app before you confirm.
Do I need to choose a procedure before consultation?
No. Select the area or concern you want to discuss. The doctor assesses suitability and explains options, risks and alternatives before you decide; the consultation may end with no procedure.
Where can I see the prices for my area?
Open the areas and prices panel from this page. Doctor prices are shown first and all treatment prices are subject to consultation. The final plan and charge must be confirmed before treatment.
What should I tell the doctor before treatment?
Explain your goals, relevant medical history, medicines and previous procedures. The clinician checks treatment-specific suitability and discusses realistic limits, material risks and alternatives.
What aftercare and review will I receive?
If a procedure is agreed, the clinic supplies preparation, aftercare, warning signs, contact guidance and review arrangements for that specific plan. Timing and response vary between patients.
